Experts say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So why do so many of us take it for granted?
According to a study done in 2011 by the NPD group, about 18 percent of males and 13 percent of females between the ages of 35 and 54 skip breakfast.
That number goes up to 28 percent and 18 percent respectively among adults between the ages of 18 and 34.
The question now becomes - why do so many of us skip breakfast? Is it because we are too busy and don’t have enough time, or perhaps we just don’t believe it’s that important after all?I would think it’s a mixture of both which is good because we can fix both of them.
If it’s time, all you have to do is wake up 10 to 15 minutes earlier each day.However, if the problem is that you don’t believe eating a healthy breakfast each day, there isn’t much that you can do, but I am here to shed some light into some of the most important reasons as to why breakfast is such an important meal.

Reason #1: Your EnergyThe more time you go without eating, the more your body starts to slow down. Remember that food is your body’s energy source and the longer you go without it, the more your body will slow down.Missing breakfast could mean that you are going 18 hours without eating so even though you might not notice, you will start slowing down.Don’t be sluggish and eat your breakfast!
Reason #2: Your MemoryWould you believe me if I told you that eating breakfast will improve your memory throughout the day? I didn’t know that myself, so I do not expect you to believe me.However, researchers who reviewed 47 nutrition studies found that children and adolescents who ate breakfast had better mental function.Give your memory a boost by eating your breakfast!
Reason #3: Your ConcentrationDid you know that your brain starts focusing on storing the energy it has left when you go long periods of time without eating? Say the time between dinner and lunch the next day.Your brains mechanism of storing energy takes away from your ability to concentrate. Not to mention that you could deal with headaches and hunger pangs which make it even harder to concentrate on anything other than food.Want to be more focused? Eat your breakfast!
Reason #4: Your HeartI would do anything to make sure my heart functions properly - wouldn’t you?The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that skipping breakfast could lead to weight gain, as well as increase the risk of heart disease in healthy individuals over time.The study also found that women who didn’t eat breakfast for a period of two weeks at more during the rest of the day and developed higher LDL cholesterol levels than women who ate breakfast every day.I think that if eating a healthy breakfast can help your heart in any way, there is no good reason to skip it.
Reason #5: Your WeightAccording to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), more than one-third (34.9% or roughly 78.6 million) American adults are obese.I don’t want to scare you but heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer can be caused by obesity.So how does eating breakfast tie into all this? Brain scans have shown that skipping breakfast makes fatty, high calorie foods appear more attractive as time passes.Obviously eating high calorie foods all the time will lead to obesity so eat your breakfast and stay away from abnormal cravings.
Reason #6: Your MoodWho doesn’t want to be in a good mood all the time? That’s probably an impossible task, but if you could do something to help start your day in a good mood wouldn’t you?
